Time to take stock of ourselves as a people

I ENJOY doing the census. Dare I use the word 'fun'? It will give an overview of the entire population. It will be a fascinating picture to future generations in 100 years' time.

The 1901 and 1911 censuses are now available online, free of charge. The Irish Independent special supplement (April 4, 2011) on the census entries of the families of Eamon de Valera, Padraig Pearse and Michael Collins was fascinating. It also shows how fast Irish society changed in the last 100 years, so that period appears to us to be such a different country.

Sunday, 10 April, is Census Day. Let us take a moment to take stock of ourselves as a people and so add to the experiences of our ancestors, who managed to survive the War of Independence, the Civil War and difficult economic times.
