Time to scrap TDs' expenses

MOST people do not realise that the taxpayer funds political parties and that the various generous vouched and unvouched allowances for politicians, in effect, duplicate the party funding.

In 2008, €13.1m went to the parties under the leader's allowance scheme and under the electoral acts.

The only allowance that should be retained is travel expenses for politicians who live outside Dublin, but only on a vouched basis and only with those entitled to the OAP travel pass expected to claim and use it.
