Time to give Irish abroad a vote
I would like to join with Bobby Gilmore (Letters, December 18) in his call for consideration to be given to the emigrant vote.
Those of us who were involved in the 'Glor an Deorai' votes for emigrants campaign in the late '80s and '90s will be familiar with the trojan work done by Bobby Gilmore and his colleagues for the neglected Irish in Britain.
It is an opportune time, particularly after the successful Farmleigh conference, to consider giving voting rights, for example, in the next presidential election. It is now clear that our Irish abroad have contributed much to our country and that they would like to continue to do so in generous and creative ways.
