Twenty-five European counries have joined the Schengen Visa scheme, which allows visitors from such countries as China, India and Russia unrestricted movement between those countries.
The Schengen Visa costs around €60 per person. Ireland hasn't joined Schengen, so instead operates its own little visa scheme for €90 per person.
If we are serious about reviving our beleaguered tourism industry, we must either join Schengen, or find some other means to remove this self-imposed bureaucratic barrier.
Thousands of hotels, restaurants, coach companies and visitor attractions would be very grateful if Justice Minister Dermot Ahern would rectify this situation.
