Tighter laptop security needed

IT is estimated that 10,278 laptops are lost or stolen at US airports each year. There would seem to be a similar trend emerging in Ireland; hardly a week goes by without a report of losses or theft.

In many cases the PCs have sensitive unencrypted data which, in the wrong hands, could cause significant loss or damage to organisations and individuals alike.

Companies spend millions on data security and contingency planning for main servers or mainframe systems, yet seem to have a very light touch when it comes to laptops.

Government departments, banks, insurance companies, and even the GAA should take a lead; I suggest that encryption be mandatory in all organisations which deal with sensitive data. It would give the public peace of mind while protecting organisations against very significant financial losses.
