The Irish are not 'compliant sheep'

Sir -- Would Declan Doyle (Letters, Sunday Independent, June 12, 2011) please explain what he means by writing "make Ireland a real republic"? What he interprets as the Irish being "compliant, docile and stupid little sheep" in his letter, is in my opinion the noble honour, discipline, culture and probity of Irish people.
