The fine mind of Ming the Merciless

I read the article about Luke 'Ming' Flanagan by Brian McDonald (Irish Independent, December 30). The article claims that Mr Flanagan was once regarded as an eccentric no-hoper and that he was laughed off as a joke candidate when he first ran for election.

By whom? At the time, I seem to remember he was the only candidate in Galway West highlighting tax evasion by another politician and, thanks to Mr Flanagan, the tax issue was eventually dealt with.

His views on cannabis, which get a lot of coverage, are views shared by many people. The cannabis issue is only one of many that he champions. As the article mentions, he has also reduced his public service allowances drastically because of the current economic climate and advocates the same for all politicians.
