The EU built boom -- but we blew it

Christopher Founy asserts that it was "the intellect, diligence, drive and greatness of the people of Ireland which brought well-deserved prosperity" followed by a global recession (Letters, November 20).

It reminds me of a very enjoyable holiday in Ireland three years ago, when the tour guide informed his guests numerous times of that very point: that the country was growing because of some inherent ability of the Irish.

When I asked the tour guide if the enormous grants from the EU had contributed to that growth, he dismissed the point as irrelevant, in the same terms as your letter from Mr Founy.
