The dark hand of history
• Dermot Ryan in his letter (Irish Independent, October 11) attacks Kevin Myers on his reading of history, yet presents us with his own version of the past; one that is not only black/white but plain wrong.
Mr Ryan attempts to defend the murderers of Tsar Nicholas II. According to Mr Ryan Nicholas deserved some retribution for his "sinful treatment of the Serfs."
There is one central fault to this argument: There were no Serfs in Russia during Nicholas's reign; Tsar Alexander II had freed them. Whether or not Nicholas treated the peasants badly is another story but surely his family, including his innocent son Alexei, did not deserve the same fate which the Bolsheviks dealt out to them.
