Super Mario

• As Silvio Berlusconi made a play to return to politics last week, the abiding stories of the week were captured in the 'Corriere dello Sport', the Italian sports newspaper, with its front page-headline 'I Supermario di'Europa', featuring pictures of Mario Balotelli and Mario Monti, with Mr Monti clad in a Balotelli-like mohican hairstyle.

As SuperMario 1 was vanquishing the Germans with his outstanding double strike in Warsaw, the suave SuperMario 2 was helping to wrong-foot Angelina Ballerina with his political nous, culminating in the Merkel back-down and a deal struck to allow direct European recapitalisation of banks.

The Azzurri have shown that attack is the best form of defence on the field (despite their defeat by Spain in a game too far) and their leader has adopted similar successful tactics to lead the way in Europe. So keep Bunga Berlusconi away from politics, SuperMarios rule OK!
