Suicide help

• May I call on the Government to implement a national suicide statutory authority? The crisis in our society in relation to suicide has been going on for so long that the State must act.

There are now more deaths from suicide than there are from road deaths and yet we have a very progressive body to prevent deaths on the road, which is the Road Safety Authority. Huge sums of money are spent in the preventive side and in education, be it via the medium of television or print, and there is no doubt that this is working.

The State has a moral duty to set up a statutory body and allocate similar monies to prevent this ongoing national tragedy.
