Striking a blow for our poor republic

• On behalf of the Hibernian Association For The Preservation Of Poverty, I would like to take issue with Robert Sullivan's redundant suggestion (Irish Independent, June 28) that poverty should be taxed.

Surely he is aware that we, the poor, voluntarily tax ourselves by doing the lottery, in the hopeless expectation that we will win something -- not for ourselves, but to contribute to the welfare of members of the Dail.

In addition, we donate half of our pension in order to sponsor a TD.
