Stop the Cavaliere
• As Silvio Berlusconi once more tries to get the Italian people to elect him for a cringe-inducing fourth time, this time with a 27-year-old 'first lady' by his side (Irish Independent, December 28), let's hope that the Milanese crooner won't be singing 'I Will Survive' in 2013.
In his absence, the Italian economy has stabilised under Prime Minister Mario Monti, but the news of Berlo's potential return prompted a collapse in the Italian financial markets. Let's hope that, come election day, a resurgent Super Mario 2 will deliver the coup de grace to Il Cavaliere, so that Berlusconi can finally be prosecuted and punished for his many indiscretions that have upset so many of my Italian friends both here and in Italy.
Anyway, hopefully the €36m per annum he has to give to his long-suffering former wife will put a dent in his campaign war chest!
