It seems the days of the Charvet Shirts (Charles Haughey's favourite in his day of the belt-tightening speech) are alive and well, despite severe austerity measures being heaped on the little people.
On January 17, your paper had an article on page 12 regarding six home repossessions due to peoples' difficulties paying their mortgages, and then on page 13, €12,000 of taxpayers' money was being spent on Christmas cards sent by TDs to their supporters.
There are many charities throughout Ireland that would have put that money to a lot of good use for families. There are many families who would have paid mounting bills and put food on the table with it. It would be laughable, but I do not even feel like laughing.
