Sport for all

• Despite the failure of the GAA to eliminate the scourge of violence from its games, the organisation is still unique. Hurling and football have the potential to represent the very best of Ireland.

In the afterglow of the Olympics, I could not help but ponder how wonderful it would have been to see some of these great unsung heroes represented on a world stage.

Alas, GAA games are not international. Our exceptional and talented stars will never carry their flag on a world stage.

Our young people must be supported and encouraged by government funding. They must be inspired and supported to compete at the highest global level.

Schools and colleges must buy in to this sporting culture if we truly are to fulfil the potential of our gifted youth and see our flag raised in their honour at world stadiums.
