Special Courts for our errant bankers
Sir -- The Special Criminal Court (SCC) was a priceless tool in the fight against IRA terrorism during the Troubles. It worked then because it simply required the word of a Chief Superintendent to put known criminals behind bars.
The Republic is now facing an even greater threat to its economic independence because of the activities of senior bank officials. A suitably qualified court to deal with rogue bankers and developers should be set up without delay.
Through myriad loopholes, weaknesses in company law, and their close connections with members of the political elite, white-collar criminals have been able to cover their tracks with the efficiency of paramilitary organisations.
