Sobering thought

• It is scarcely believable that while the plain citizenry of Ireland watch through their fingers as a euro crisis unfolds on their TV screens like a badly-written disaster movie, some in the political establishment imagine there are more important things to worry about.

For even as the EU Commissioner for Trade Karel de Gucht admits that emergency planning has begun for a Greek euro exit (Irish Independent, May 18), Roisin Shortall's crusade against the demon drink must continue regardless.

Ms Shortall entrenched her position by announcing an end to alcohol sponsorship of sports.
