Sir - The recent brutal murder of an innocent man shocked all decent people throughout Ireland and has prompted further calls for a clampdown on organised crime.

Sir - The recent brutal murder of an innocent man shocked all decent people throughout Ireland and has prompted further calls for a clampdown on organised crime.

The fact this man was not the intended victim doesn't render the crime any less heinous. No human being deserves to have his/her life cut short by murder.

But I despair when I read of, or listen to, widespread condemnation of gangland murders while knowing that many of those who shake their heads in disgust and horror will not report criminal activity to the gardai.

Turning a blind eye to drug dealing in particular is sadly a common tendency, with far too people opting to pretend they've seen and heard nothing when they become aware of pushers handing out their poisonous merchandise. It's easier to sing dumb, as if it doesn't concern them.

Unfortunately it concerns all of us, because there is a direct link between handing over money for drugs and tragedies such as last week's murder.
