Single parenthood not to blame for protests

THOSE who would like to hold the rise of single-parent families responsible for the rioting in Britain ignore two salient facts. Rioting is by no means a recent phenomenon; it has been around in Britain for centuries. Nor, contrary to some people's perception, are there significantly more single-parent families than before. In the 19th Century, premature death of one or both spouses was a common occurrence, with life expectancy much lower than at present. In the 20th Century, two world wars removed a large section of males through violent death. Breast beating about the decline of the nuclear family, with its echoes of an idealised past, may make those who engage in it feel suitably self-righteous, but the facts don't particularly support it.
