Self-flagellation and Kevin Myers
KEVIN Myers asks, regarding our failure to date to issue an invitation to Queen Elizabeth to visit: "Does such reticence betoken mature self-confidence? Or does it actually suggest a chronic, almost pathological insecurity?" (Irish Independent, July 2).
As it happens, I have been studying the extensive coverage given in the British press on the forthcoming visit of the Pope.
There has been quite a bit of negative comment, with many observers and commentators taking the view that the invitation should never have been extended -- much in the same vein as that being reported here on the proposed plan to extend an invitation to the queen.
