Seasonal sense

• I agree with Philip O'Neill (Letters, December 27) that Archbishop Diarmuid Martin's message at Christmas was "a breath of fresh air", in contrast to the legalistic drone of the Archbishop of Westminster, who used the occasion to launch a broadside at David Cameron's plans to legalise gay marriage next year.

Rome is still intent on regaining England for the Catholic faith and has had remarkable success in converting Ann Widdecombe, the Duchess of Kent, Tony Blair and other prominent public figures to the church.

Also, Archbishop Rowan Williams was too intellectual in his approach to the organisation of the Church of England and was considered "wishy washy" by those who prefer clarity of judgment and snap decision-making.
