Savage history

It is difficult to accept Kevin Myers's article on how toxic an effect 1916 and the struggle for independence/ civil war had on our subsequent history and economic development.

Firstly, one of the main planks of his argument is the "fact" that "only in Ireland will they (the 'catastrophic events of a century ago') be commemorated with pride".

Anyone who watches the UK Remembrance Sunday ceremony and who sees France celebrate their revolution on July 14, and the US its Independence Day on July 4 each year, knows that, in these and many other countries, the catastrophic events of not just a century ago, but of over two centuries ago and of more recently, are commemorated annually with great pomp and pride.
