Royal traditions can come and go

Sir -- When Ruth Dudley Edwards says, 'Diana... was well-born, a virgin and seemed sweet and malleable,' she makes it seem that virginity was just another 'desirable' quality in terms of her getting the job.

In fact it was the only qualification. Charles was late (for a prince) getting married to the extent that people wondered whether he was 'past it'.

And his problem was finding a virgin, which Diana Spencer was eventually seen to be.
