Role of women

• I would like to comment on the on-going issue of the participation of women in electoral politics. Research has shown that Ireland is a country with one of the worst gender balances in its parliament.

This is evident from the 2011 General Election, as only 25 women hold seats in the 31st Dáil out of a possible 166 (15.1pc).

The UN has identified a number of areas were female participation in politics may be improved and strengthened, two of the main being an equalisation of educational opportunities and the introduction of a quota system.
