• Jacqueline Cotter, from Manchester, states that "in Ireland the family is still a very dominant unit and the male is the dominant force within that unit", (Letters, September 1). When I look around me I see a totally different society.
Far from being dominant, men are increasingly marginalised and regularly removed from the family unit, for no justifiable reason, due to the family laws. Ms Cotter is, of course, right in stating that good male role models have a beneficial influence on young men.
But her perception that Ireland is significantly better than England in this regard is wrong.
