Rising revising

• In his letter (Irish Independent, May 15), Pierce Martin condemns commemoration of 1916, since, he says, "the moral sentiments and the ideology of Fenian nationalism are dangerous for any liberal democracy to indulge in".

While I can appreciate his sentiments I am afraid his statement lacks historical perspective.

The realpolitik of the situation was that due to armed conquest the parliament in London was in charge of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1801.
