Rich get sanctuary, the poor short shrift
In the same week that those struggling to get by were again attacked -- first by a new proposal to dissolve the protections afforded by JLCs and then by the decision to levy a flat household tax (with an equally extraordinary exemption for those, regardless of income, living in 'social housing') -- Revenue released details that showed how little the wealthy contribute (Irish Independent, July 30).
The report shows that last year 608 people had incomes of between €1m and €2m and 188 had incomes in excess of €2m. But what is galling about this is that the Government contrived a situation to allow those on such high incomes to pay minimum taxes.
While some of this group paid effective rates of 20pc, others astonishingly paid as little as 12pc.
