I suspect that she understands the concept of realpolitik all too well. Arguably, what Ms Shortall objected to was the apparent sustaining of 'parish pump' politics.
Parish pump politics in Ireland, through its privileging of the local over the national, has bedeviled the creation of solidarity and social equality. Sitting politicians can't be blamed for this as they have inherited a flawed system.
