'Reality' of excess alcohol must be aired
• There is much speculation that setting a minimum price-per-unit for alcohol will have the greatest impact on supermarkets and other outlets that promote wine, spirits and beer as 'loss leaders'.
Fair point, but what about our 'lost leaders' -- successive governments that chickened out of dealing with the 'national problem' and facing down the drinks industry in the interests of the common good?
I can immediately hear mutterings about personal responsibility and temperance -- and they have a huge part to play -- but government action and personal action are not mutually exclusive. So why not both? This is a cancer that must be attacked on multiple fronts.
