Put suicide at the top of our agenda
Sir -- In last week's Sunday Independent there were two articles: -- 'Thirty suicides already this year from all walks of life' by Jim Cusack and 'Debt burdens have led to disturbing rise in depression' by Jerome Reilly.
I was absolutely shocked to read that in the first nine days of 2012 already 30 people have lost their lives to suicide. However, it is sadly not surprising in the current climate. What really irks me is the fact that this news was on page 22 of the paper and did not make front page headlines. There have been copious articles written regarding the increase of suicide and depression which is related to the recession -- and it is beginning to feel like we are immune to this problem.
Maybe it is time for us to tie a white ribbon on the railings of Dail Eireann in memory of those we have lost to suicide over the last few years -- and more importantly to act as a constant reminder to those in power of the devastation they are responsible for.
