Pull the other one, Noel Kelly

Sir -- 'Superstar' showbiz agent Noel Kelly asserts that some of his top-earning stars in RTE are struggling to pay their mortgages and other bills. Really? I take that with a large dollop of salt. Would Mr Kelly care to name at least one of his penurious people?

Look at the facts. For the best part of 30 years, most of the people in question have been working in RTE, earning inflated salaries. Indeed, in some instances, their spouses also work there.

Mr Kelly pleads that his overpaid stars pay income tax at 51 per cent, plus PRSI and health insurance. Didn't every worker fortunate enough then to have a job have to pay those taxes in proportion to their wage? More than 450,000 of those workers are now on the dole and are struggling to make ends meet, while Mr Kelly's privileged stars, even with cutbacks, are still earning massive salaries in RTE.
