Property levy will tax politicians too
This week, the first batch of home owners who have failed to pay the €100 household charge will receive a letter reminding them of their debt. If they do not respond, the next stages will be a reminder, followed by a warning of prosecution.
The Revenue Commissioners can hardly do anything less. Nobody loves taxes, but everybody must pay them. Obviously that applies to the most unpopular taxes as well as those that strike "under the radar" like PAYE and VAT.
For historical and other reasons, antipathy to property taxes is particularly strong in Ireland. But the household charge is in a class all on its own.
