• It is disgraceful to read of GUBU plan to amalgamate the National Library, the National Archives and the Irish Manuscripts Commission. That a Taoiseach would even, for one moment, allow such a barbaric idea to sit on the Cabinet table is beyond belief.

Since the inception of the State, no Taoiseach has ever made any attempt to lessen the importance of the work of cultural institutions of Ireland.

The long overdue reorganisation of quangos and county councils is given a wide berth, yet important institutions can be attacked.
