President's salary is unsustainable

Mary Kenny's article on a cheaper presidency was very interesting and timely.

The current salary of €300,000 plus per annum, as well as an annual untaxed presidential allowance of €300,000 plus, is unsustainable in the Ireland of today. My vote will go to the presidential candidate who will pledge to forgo the salary altogether.

An annual tax-free presidential allowance of €300,000 plus is more than 10 times the taxed income of the average family. If the next president wants to show empathy with ordinary Irish people then this kind of gesture is required.
