President's salary is still too high for times

AS we prepare to enter into a new campaign to replace our President, wouldn't it be appropriate in the present time of austerity to reduce again the salary to something that reflects a concern for the public finances?

The current salary is €250,000, which was voluntarily reduced by Mary McAleese from €325,000. It is still too much for a country struggling to repay massive debt.

It would be appropriate now for the declared candidates to announce how much salary they would be prepared to take. If they really consider the position an honour, let them do the honourable thing and put our country first.
