Pre-schools must advertise places

I read with interest that 30,000 children entitled to free pre-school have not yet signed up for their places (Irish Independent, January 11).

It needs to be pointed out that these are not just free childcare places.

The Early Childhood Care and Education Scheme is available to children in all participating pre-school settings whether that be a creche, playschool, pre-school or montessori.

If the child is not full time in a creche, he or she is entitled to three hours a day, five days a week for the same number of days that their local primary school is open.

I run my own pre-school, which, by the way, is fully booked for this term, but feel that every time the scheme is mentioned in the media this point is not made very clearly.

It is, of course, up to each service to advertise their vacancies and spread the message loud and clear in their own area.
