Poor faith

• The controversy over the closure of the Vatican embassy reminds me of the behaviour of some Italian citizens following the death of Mussolini. The dictator's body was hung from a lamppost and brave citizens queued up to kick, punch and spit on it.

Not a particularly courageous act as he was unlikely to retaliate at that stage. Last year Enda Kenny launched a blistering attack on the Vatican.

Not to be outdone, Eamon Gilmore closed down the Vatican embassy to prove his anti-Catholic credentials.
