While Damien Carroll (Irish Independent, March 1) may well have written tongue-in-cheek about both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, I for one found his words tragic.

That 21st-century Ireland has two major parties, to all intents and purposes, deliberately keeping the nation in the doldrums, illustrates very clearly the major vacuum currently in the body politic here. Sadly, poor old Ireland is not alone in this current international stagnation of major political parties.

In an era where the Oireachtas members are purportedly better educated than the majority of their predecessors ever were, chaos reigns supreme, as ministerial and Cabinet authority are sacrificed at the altar of the political polls.
