Pension penalty

• I wish to draw the attention of those of your readers who, like myself, are approaching the pension at the age of 66. A series of changes in eligibility for the Old Age Contributory Pension are effective from September.

These changes have been processed quietly by the Department of Social Welfare and have not been signalled by a media campaign. They were due to be introduced in 2020 but have been fast-tracked.

When I first checked I was informed I would receive a pension of €225 a week. In the past few weeks I checked again to learn the new rate would be €196, a loss of €1,500 a year.
