Peaceful knight

• My heart was lifted when I read of the granting to John Hume of the rare honour of Knight Commander of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of Saint Gregory the Great, a papal knighthood bestowed by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI (Irish Independent, July 6).

Mr Hume proved that peaceful methods were the only true way to achieve civil rights in the North.

Indeed, had the great efforts of Mr Hume and his allies not been hindered by the disastrous and counter-productive terrorist campaign waged by those (such as the so-called 'Provisional IRA') who claimed to be pursuing the same ultimate goals as him, we might today have a far less divided Northern Ireland, and perhaps even a united Ireland.
