Out of credit

• I read this week that our former Taoiseach and 'leader' Bertie Ahern will from now on have to fork out for his own mobile phone expenses (Irish Independent, December 6), which won't be easy for a man who doesn't like to carry cash on his person.

To be honest, the story made me laugh, smile and gasp at the same time when one considers the amount he was also claiming for secretarial expenses on top of the free mobile.

This former perk is now, according to St Enda Kenny, a luxury the taxpayer can no longer afford.

That's right Enda, the taxpayer can no longer be expected to pay for free mobiles and secretarial expenses to former Taoisigh when we now have to pay instead for your "special advisers".

May I also suggest to Bertie that he tries moving to a well-known network that offers great deals but has little or no coverage -- that's what we all ultimately want for Bertie.
