Our neutrality is gone

• It was with total disbelief that I read in your newspaper that the Government has deployed Irish soldiers to Mali as part of an EU-led mission.

Those of us old enough to remember the Lisbon 2 debates and assurances regarding our voting Yes for that treaty clearly remember government and European assurances that not only would our neutrality not be affected, but our Defence Forces would not be required to join any European alliances.

This action is utterly illegal. I feel complete and utter disgust towards all political parties – particularly Sinn Fein, which at the time furnished the highest republican credentials when proposing that our neutrality would be sacrosanct.
