Our leaders are away with fairies

THE Government's exhortations that we should all get happy again and start spending to get ourselves out of recession is a bit like asking the anaemic for a blood transfusion.

A recent EU survey found that three out of every 10 Irish people fear they may run out of money for food, day-to-day bills and consumer items, and 15pc fear their job is threatened.

More worrying still, a grim 45pc of Irish respondents feel that there is a high or moderate risk that they would not cope with an unexpected expense of €1,000 in the next year.
