Objectivity sadly lacking in RTE
Madam -- Are we to assume that our national broadcaster, RTE, is now the unofficial press office of Sinn Fein? It was appropriate for Jody Corcoran and John Drennan to highlight the charade of Sinn Fein's announcement of a meeting to "consider their position on Martin McGuinness shaking hands with Queen".
Having totally misjudged in advance the public reaction to the visit of Queen Elizabeth last year, the Sinn Fein publicity machine went into overdrive. In a matter of hours, RTE's midday news bulletin informed us that Sinn Fein would have no objection to the handshake. Following a statement from Buckingham Palace that a photograph would be released, our national broadcaster rushed to inform us that Sinn Fein had issued a statement stating that they would have no objections to the publication. Ye gods!
Long may we continue to hear the voices of Eilis O'Hanlon and Kevin Myers to restore some objectivity to political reporting, so sadly lacking within RTE.
