• I have just read Charlie Weston's article on how it pays to be retired (Irish Independent, July 28).
Does he not realise that a considerable number of old-age pensioners are in poor health? It is a rare person who has reached pension age who doesn't have some medical condition.
Take ourselves, for instance. My husband is 70 years old and in poor health. We spend a good portion of our pension getting in workers to do the things he used to do. Mow the lawns, clean the gutters, paint and repair etc, in order to stay in our own home. We are keeping the boys in the building game in employment and I am sure we are not the only ones.
