I am a 94-year-old man living in a nursing home in Limerick. I have lived to see Ireland gain its independence from Britain and I believe men such as Robert Emmet need to be remembered and honoured for their role.
In Emmet's speech from the dock, he said: "When my country takes her place among the nations of the Earth, then, and not till then, let my epitaph be written."
Surely with the visits of Queen Elizabeth and US President Barack Obama, all the conditions that Emmet mentioned for his epitaph to be written have been fulfilled.
