Norris among elite like Casement and Parnell
I am not in the least bit surprised that a smear campaign has begun against Senator David Norris. It is common practice in the cut and thrust of politics to try to besmirch your opponent's name especially when he is gaining ground. He can be proud because he now finds himself among elite Irishmen such as Roger Casement whom the British tried to frame regarding his so-called diaries. Charles Stewart Parnell had also been the target of the Pigott forgeries implicating him in the Phoenix Park Murders.
We have to take a serious look at who has most to gain from this and, yes, we can see the parties which would like a presidential victory. I believe that Mr Norris poses a serious threat to Irish conservatism and has every chance of being elected President. But are we mature enough to elect a man who hasn't been groomed by his party for the position? The recent attack on his character undermines what all decent Irish people believe that citizens are entitled to -- due process and the right to defend your good name.
