No basis for calls to cut bank holiday pay

Your newspaper published (June 16, 2011) calls by Retail Excellence Ireland (REI) for Joint Labour Committees (JLCs) to be scrapped and premiums for working on Sundays and bank holidays to be abolished.

REI has justified its calls by saying that if the Government takes these measures tens of thousands of existing jobs could be saved and new ones created.

When one explores the basis for REI's claims it becomes clear that its extrapolations are based on a survey of shop owners -- not on any economic analysis.
