The release of Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, whose unjust house arrest was a stain on the conscience of the free world, was a solitary highlight in an otherwise dismal year.
The detention of Suu Kyi by the ageing and discredited Burmese junta was a travesty.
Her crime was to win an election. The dignity and integrity of the peace activist won her the respect of all those who believe in freedom and democracy.
