Nation crying out for real leadership
I AGREE with Dr Maeve White regarding the state of our democracy and the fitness of any of the TDs to continue (Letters, December 2). However, I would add that what this country is really crying out for is leadership.
The party leaders talk only to their own supporters and leave the rest of us in the dark as to their intentions. A true leader would have vision and be willing to make huge sacrifices.
A good start would be to abolish the discredited ‘expenses' regime. This could be followed by announcing ruthlessly painful cuts to Dail salaries and pensions. Real leaders would tell the country where they were going and call on us to follow. Instead of this, we are confronted by the spectre of our leaders in the chauffeur-driven limos saying: “I’m not sure where I am going, but why don't you lot all run along behind!”
